While un-wintering my bike I realized that I had no brakes, and the clutch engagement point was somewhere within the left handgrip.

So, it was time to do my first ever brake bleed. An astonishing amount of air bubbled out into our specialty containment vessel (A snapple bottle) and at one point we got a bit too excited and ran the reservoir dry, which meant we basically had to start over.

Then, my brother decided he wanted to polish the yards of chrome on his bike, so I was left to do the clutch (easy!) and rear brake (challenging!) on my own.

It may seem like a minor thing, but I generally shy away from doing my own maintenance because I’m convinced I’m going to screw something up. I’ve done complete suspension replacements on my truck and disassembled enough bikes to be considered “knowledgeable” about old JDM motorcycles, but I still have that paranoia.

It’s also the first time I’ve actually worked on my own bike in our SUPER FANCY motorcycle shop.

Keen observers may note that I did not, however, mend the lower radiator, which is, in fact, not supposed to be at that angle.

Yay Ducati, for still running hydraulic fluid which needs to be bled every ~700 miles. Long live glory to Super Blue ATE.

You have an awesome bike. I’ve always wanted a Monster.

I’m the same way. I’ll do anything I can on my Jeep- but only the most basic of things on the bike. If I put it in the shop, I can tell myself that “they’re experts, they’ve done everything perfectly”, but if I do it, well, hell, maybe the torque wrench was a little sticky and OH GOD THE AXLE’S GONNA FALL OFF I HAVE TO STOP.

Funny you mention the axle falling off on a motorcycle. I’ve had that happened to be at 70mph. Code. Fucking. Brown.

I’ve bled these a thousand times. On the clutch and front brake, there should be a bleeder on the master cylinder up top. Do this one last after you’ve done the brakes/clutch at the calipers/slave cyl. You’ll be surprised how big of a difference this will make if you haven’t done it yet.

On the rear brake, its easiest to bleed if you unbolt the caliper and hold it while you bleed rather than leaving it mounted on the swingarm.
